TierraCast Eyelets and Washers

Working With Eyelets

Working with eyelets takes some practice and finesse. The preformed, round part (opposite the post) is the "top" of the eyelet, and will be on the top of your design. You'll set the top your design upside down on the dot anvil, and use the eyelet setter tool on the exposed post on the back of the design.

You want to have a minimum of 1mm of the eyelet post protruding out of the back of the design before setting. A little longer is better, but the eyelet will split if too much is protruding when you set the piece. So, be sure to select the proper eyelet length to go with the thickness of your materials. And again, practice with different materials to get a feel for what they'll need. Leather, for example, may work with a little less length, because the eyelet will compress down into the leather when set, but harder materials will need more length.

Our eyelet posts are all 2.3mm in diameter. You'll need at least a 2mm hole on very soft leather, or a 2.3mm or larger hole on stiffer leather.

Use our washers (shown below the eyelets) to reinforce very soft or thin leather. Also - check out our custom made eyelet setter tool for best results.

TierraCast Eyelet Setter & Dot Anvil

This stainless steel tool set has been custom made in California to set a range of lengths common to "3/32" eyelets. This clever tool has a little bump on the tip of the setter, and a little bump on the dot anvil - these hold the eyelet in place and protect the flanged end of the eyelet while setting. The anvil is slightly domed to allow better use with curved materials. The hexagonal shape keeps the eyelet setter from rolling around on your work table.

You will need a mallet or hammer to use the eyelet setter. You can find these on our metal working tools page.
