They saw in the sky two celestial companions - a constant never changing sun, and the luminous moon, which diminished and grew in time to a woman's own cycles. Over time, myths and legends associated with the moon changed, but her primary association with the feminine has not. The triple crescent moon symbolizes the three aspects of a woman's life - maiden, mother, and crone.
